Education and Sport.

Shiwa Ngandu’s remote location in northern Zambia places it within a long-established community where families have lived and worked alongside the estate for generations. In partnership with charitable organisations and the government, the estate supports two local schools, helping provide accessible education in an otherwise underserved area. It also promotes youth development through inter-area football teams for both men and women, encouraging teamwork and community engagement. In addition, the estate hosts students from local agricultural colleges for practical work experience, equipping young people with hands-on skills and improving future employment opportunities.

Conservation and Agriculture.

Conservation and sustainable agriculture are central to Shiwa Ngandu’s role in the region. The estate actively supports the training of wildlife scouts, including providing additional facilities for specialised K9 units, strengthening anti-poaching and conservation efforts. Agriculture also serves as a key driver of empowerment, particularly through the estate’s coffee programme, which is led and operated by women from the local community, creating income and building long-term skills. With approximately 190 staff and their families based on the estate, Shiwa Ngandu acts as an important economic hub, supporting livelihoods while promoting responsible land use and environmental stewardship.

Community Health.

Healthcare access in this remote region is supported by the Shiwa Hospital, which provides essential medical services to the estate and surrounding communities. Through estate-led fundraising, a maternity wing has been established, offering accommodation for mothers and their families who often travel long distances for care. The estate also encourages maternal health by providing starter kits to mothers who complete their antenatal programmes, supporting safer births and early childcare. In addition, community welfare is strengthened through feeding programmes that support single-parent families and orphaned children, helping to address food security and improve overall wellbeing.
